This booklet, which should be used in conjunction with the other booklets in the series, contains all the highway regulations for the geometric design of traffic areas in towns. General information is given on the requirements for locating and designing road intersections where safety must be a principal requirement in each case. In urban areas, it is often difficult to satisfy all the requirements and sometimes unsuitable junctions have to be removed. The principal types of intersection designs are summarised. These include signal-controlled, priority-allocated, non-signal controlled three and four road intersections, roundabouts and non-priority allocated intersections. Details of the dimensions and geometrical design are given for the individual elements, such as lanes, cycle tracks and crossings, pedestrian crossings, islands as well as widenings and junction edges. Guidance is given on the procedure for selecting an intersection type and for determining the most appropriate design. Examples are given in booklet IVx of the design of each of six different types of intersection.
