This paper will provide an overview of the air pollution problem in California. The links between the transportation of goods and air quality are examined. In California, the adopted and proposed emission control strategies for heavy duty motor vehicles include the following seven measures: (1) new vehicle certification programme; (2) inspection and maintenance; (3) heavy duty diesel roadside inspections; (4) fuel specifications; (5) fuel transfer evaporation controls; (6) transportation control measures; and (7) energy efficiency. Some of the efforts toward clean air that will be undertaken in the future are discussed.
