Samenvatting

This report describes the main aspects of two road safety campaigns on driver fatigue, one in Belgium and one in Greece, carried out in the framework of the European CAST project. Both campaigns were set up according to the steps and recommendations of the CAST manual, and served as a practical test of this manual. The report was produced according to the recommendations in the CAST reporting tool. The main aim of both campaigns was to reduce the number of accidents due to driver fatigue by awareness-raising and information of road users on the risks of fatigue and the promotion of effective countermeasures. The Belgian 'Pitstop' campaign targeted young drivers between 18 and 25 years of age, especially men. It ran for 4 weeks with a radio spot, an Internet website, small posters, brochures and the distribution of gadgets as main media channels. Its specific objectives, campaign strategy and evaluation variables were based on the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). The Greek 'Eyes on the Road' campaign chose professional drivers as the primary target group and non-professional drivers as the secondary one. The campaign ran for two months and the main media channels were TV and radio spots, the distribution of campaign leaflets and the Internet. Its specific objectives, campaign strategy and evaluation variables were based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TMC). (Author/publisher)
