Results of research conducted by the Western Highway Institute show a. o. that a large percentage of total splash and spray from a large lorry comes off the front axle and the drive axle; tread pattern and depth influence the intensity of splash and spray; windshield height spray is caused by wheel-induced air currents; water trough and channels are ineffective as they tend to fill with gravel, dirt and ice; compressed air ducts could be used to direct spray inward; and a rigid vane placed at an inward angle in front of wheels could be effective in deflecting the water inward.
