Samenvatting

There is a bewildering array of organizational and procedural hassles to effect changes in all signage systems. The Canadian situation is investigated and presented here. Organizations have different requirements - some of which may even be contradictory to each other and to the special needs of persons with disabilities. In addition, the requirements and specifications are not always followed by the authorities responsible for implementing the signage. This paper identifies and describes the procedures and other considerations involved in the implementation of signage within the overall environmental communications and wayfinding information for persons with visual, hearing or cognitive disabilities in transportation terminals. It is based on a recent report for the Transportation Development Centre (Geehan and Dewar, 1990).
