Capturing vehicle crash data : an information revolution.

This paper discusses the need for reliable vehicle crash data to determine causes of accidents. Understanding the cause helps to save lives and prevent similar accidents in the future. Traditional crash investigation methods use guesswork and assumptions, and are employed after the crash. Analysis of data is limited to the more serious crashes, and the lack of knowledge limits the decision making of policy makers and vehicle designers. Technological developments in vehicle design do not always further crash data collection, and data is captured differently by separate manufacturers. Diagnostic data collection modules or event data recorders are being installed in vehicles and the information benefits a wide range of users: the automotive and insurance industries; government; researchers; medical providers; and the public.
