Samenvatting

Functional separation and colour coding of rear-end lighting and signaling systems is recommended, and a possible rearrangement is proposed. Signal light intensity should also be reduced for night time driving. An analysis of some American data on motorway rear-end collisions showed that trucks were over-involved in collisions while on the ascending grade, caused by an inability to correctly detecting and estimating speed reductions. It is suggested to code speed categories by a signal light array on the rear end. Coasting signals could also be introduced, in combination with the stop-lamp.
