Samenvatting

Not much is known about the drivers population and in particular about the car drivers population in Europe. On the ground of the features obtained from a representative survey about the active car drivers (S.A.R.T.R.E.) conducted in 15 European countries, a description is obtained as a first estimate, since dealing with information brought by interviews with this population. Taking into account the demographic context, the European countries are compared concerning the significance of car driving among the population. Through another source and for some countries, one tries to assess the car driving licences' owners and among them those who do not drive. Some factual descriptors brought by survey are used to describe the driving activity, the vehicle driven and the risk of accident. This article leads to set a system to study and observe drivers in Europe.
