The development of occupant restraint systems for adults and children is reviewed from a historical, current and future perspective. The performance of the current safety systems is discussed. The influence of modified interior structures, for greater safety, is discussed for both frontal and side impacts. The paper finally considers the development and performance requirements for occupant protection in the future and the advanced techniques becoming available.
