Samenvatting

The City of Bremen, Germany, was named CIVITAS City of the Year for 2005 and continues to implement innovative urban transport policy initiatives to boost the use of public transport and car sharing. The city has a well-developed e-ticketing payment system, the pre-paid Bremer Karte, which also allows electronic shopping. The card is not contactless and has to be inserted into the onboard equipment. All BSAG (city transport operator) vehicles are equipped with terminals and there are plans for terminals in the vehicles run by the regional cooperative public transport operator VBN. The Bremer Karte PLUS has an additional contactless chip, which gives electronic key access for car sharing. A new innovation is a post-paid public transport smart card for infrequent passengers. This is the Bequem ohne Bargeld (convenient without cash) or BOB card. Bremen's single car-sharing operator is Cambio. Members have access to 110 cars at 37 pick-up points.
