Samenvatting

This report was prepared by an International Scientific Expert Group of the OECD Road Transport Research Programme. The study was initiated in March 1989 and had as objectives: to examine the design characteristics needed for a roadway to accommodate trucks; to review traffic management measures and infrastructure needs of trucks; to consider possibilities for designated or dedicated infrastructure provisions in terms of truck lanes, routes or networks; and to assess the traffic, safety and environmental impacts of road freight vehicles. The report is structured around six chapters: I. Introduction, II. Road Geometry and Vehicle Manoeuvrability, III. Traffic Management Measures and Infrastrucuture Needs, IV. Truck Lanes, Routes and Networks, V. Impacts of Trucks: Environment, Safety and Operating Costs, VI. Evaluation. Three Appendices provide additional information on Statistical Trends in Road Freight, Noise and Accidents. The report presents an international review of experience with truck traffic operations and provides an assessment of infrastructure measures aimed at improving the efficiency of routes and networks.
