Samenvatting

This publication discussed the technical, economic and market potential for reducing exhaust emission in the transport sector through increased efficiency and fuel substitution. The car market and its related fuel supply and infrastructure systems are examined, along with policies that might effect beneficial changes in the market. Sections are provided on the following: 1) greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. This include a comparison of the levels of such gases produced by each transport mode (cars, buses, trains, aircrafts, and ships) and by each transport type (freight or passenger transport); 2) prospects for greenhouse gas abatement through vehicle design or through the use of alternate fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, alcohol, hydrogren, and electricity; 3) the potential market for alternative fuels in North America, OECD countries, and in Europe. The policies used for promoting alternative fuels are also presented and discussed.
