Samenvatting

Pedestrians need to be able to move about a neighbourhood safely and conveniently. Residents need places to meet or watch the world go by. Pedestrians need to cross all streets safely. A sustainable and social community is one that engenders more walking and where public transport is readily available to many destinations. This paper considers the synergies between these ideals and suggests a nomenclature to recognise the relationships between pedestrians traffic, passive activities. This includes debate on the principles of accessibility to public transport and the principles of crossing busier roads. The rhythm of existing successful streets is extended to new areas. The analysis has been helped by modeling the behaviour of drivers and pedestrians in varying road conditions. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E213376.
