The use of slow-moving trucks in household refuse collection is an integral part of everyday life. Current practice of collection involves a group of loaders collecting and loading refuse onto a slow moving truck. Two deaths are reported resulting from low velocity, high energy collisions from slow moving dust carts. The potential risk these vehicles pose especially whilst working in residential areas is commonly not recognized. Pedestrians, in particular, the elderly and the young, are at risk from this type of accident. These two cases supported by Department of Transport figures suggest a further target for injury prevention, by improving the visibility of such vehicles.
