Cassiope : the DRIVE information system for public transport.

Launched in the context of the DRIVE programme, the Cassiope Project provides standards for future computer-aided bus operating systems (mainly in off-line domains) and demonstrates the feasibility and profitability of the proposed architecture on pilot applications implemented in public transport companies. Currently operating processes (for tasks such as scheduling, real time control, passenger information, fare collection, maintenance, strategic planning, management information) rely on a manual approach or specific computerised tools used only in one or a few domains. Cassiope aims at defining a new generation of integrated systems, where all data used by separate functions is part of a general database. Function-oriented modules are defined, with identified inputs or outputs, so that any operator can build his customised system from a kit, by using the modules he needs and any supplier is able to provide software or equipment addressing the module requirements. Operator needs were determined from: (I) a large survey of 119 public transport companies realised in 1989 and (II) the feedback of a panel of nine major European bus networks (Barcelona, Hamburg, Marseille, Thessaloniki, Milano, Genoa, Nice, Sheffield, Saarbrücken). Three demonstration projects are currently being prepared on prototype development in: interactive passenger information; inter-operability of scheduling software; and use of fare collection records to produce management information (MIS). These demonstration projects are based on the building of a standardised data model and a Cassiope compatible database in each of the sites. In conjunction with DRIVE recommendations on a road intelligent environment, Cassiope is viewed as an important step in the development of a pan-European architecture for bus (or public transport) operation aids, paving the way for improvement and financial savings in bus operations and a large diffusion of EC standards.
