A three-stage experimental survey was conducted to investigate the route choice behavioral groups. Subjects from two major metropolitan areas were selected to participate in this experiment where they were ask to responseto a series of scenarios designed to reveal their route choice behavior. Five types of behavioral groups were derived from the conventional notations of route choice principles as UE (User Equilibrium or UO, User Optimum), and SO (System Optimum) for both pre-trip and en-route cases. The results demonstrated that only about 3% was in SO group and 22% to 37% in UE group in pre-trip case; while 4% to 9% were categorized into SO group and 19%-29% of UE group in en-route case.
