Samenvatting

This chapter reviews the literature related to the causes, measurement, and effects of driver and visual workload. It discusses the performance of the human visual system and its limitations on driving. Experimental methods for the measurement and interpretation of visual behaviour are considered. Relevant research that illustrates the workload implications of basic vehicle control, use of conventional instruments, and interaction with advanced driver information systems is highlighted. The need for context-relevant measurement techniques is highlighted for evaluation of workload situations where impairment in visual system may result in greater accident risk.
