Use of the Census Place of Work database for transportation planning and modelling has been discussed in a number of papers and reports, most recently at a one-day seminar on the topic sponsored jointly by the Transportation Associaton of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners and Statistics Canada. Similarly, the content of the Census Place of Work database is well described elsewhere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss at a slightly more conceptual level some of the key attributes of the Census Place of Work database that make it a valuable and unique source of information for transportation planning purposes in Canada.
