This paper will consider the challenges for HMI (human machine interface)design to maintain safety as customer demands increase the amount of technology in vehicles. Current HMI developments tend to address the physical ergonomics as vehicle manufacturers produce more innovative ways of controlling increasing complex vehicle functions with less clutter on the dashboard. To develop safer vehicles, the HMI design will need to consider cognitive ergonomics in addition to physical aspects. By controlling when and how the driver can interact with the vehicle, it is possible to manage the workload of the driver to improve their safety. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
