A representative sample is used to compare the incidence of claims for the relative periods of 1972, 1973 and 1974, that is, before and after the fuel saving laws were introduced. In view of the decreased severity of accidents in general there is an improvement in the economic wastage position of the country with regard to local and imported material. The restriction of petrol sales has had an obvious effect on road safety because of the reductions in the numbers of long distance travellers, but probably not as much as the lowering of the upper speed limits.
