Samenvatting

This report sets out the key impacts that climate change could have on transport and makes recommendations to ensure that the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and other transport authorities are prepared. The main areas for action are major and minor roads, rail and co-ordination. The DfT co-ordination role should include a climate change / transport web page, reactivating the severe weather impact group, and a technical workshop for climate change modellers / transport practitioners. Changes to the technical standards for main roads will need to be revised. Guidance will need to be provided to local authorities on the maintenance and improvement of local roads. A workshop on planning for the effects of climate change on rail bound transport is suggested. The Office of the Rail Regulator will need to account for climate change when setting the budget for Network Rail. It isconsidered that climate change impacts should be considered when proposals for rail enhancement schemes are drawn up with the Strategic Rail Authority. (Author/publisher)
