Samenvatting

This article describes the use of intelligent transport systems (ITS) technology in controlling lane change requirements in the city of Brisbane, Australia. A system engineering approach was used to design a complete operational system based on the user's needs. The advanced lane control system provides the nerve centre for lane control and reversible road systems. It is built on an effective fault detection and error handling system integrated with a safe and efficient transition engine. This controls all road devices, ensuring that they change state at the required time, in the required order, with appropriate feedback mechanisms to deliver safe and enhanced road functionality. It uses a purpose-built scripting language to define and execute the transition sequences and has the capacity to deliver advanced lane control in more complex scenarios.
