Samenvatting

The DUMAS road safety project in the EU is described. It brings together expertise in urban safety management (USM) in 1997-2000 for studies in 10 towns. The poor implementation of USM is discussed. The importance of mobilising public opinion and support for road safety measures, financing and legal issues are outlined. An integrated transport and safety plan for Baden, Austria is used as an example. Casualties and accidents were reduced by 60%.
