Samenvatting

A national postal survey of 1242 motorcycle riders was carried out in 1982. The questionnaire related to characteristics of the riders, their bikes, their riding experience, training and accidents (including minor spills), together with attitudes and opinions covering a wide range of aspects of riding on the road. The fifty-four attitude and opinion statements were generated from discussion groups which were held with motorcyclists in various parts of the country. The survey has yielded a considerable amount of general information about the population of motorcyclists in great britain. It also provides an insight into motorcyclists' views on several key issues, including attitudes to training and testing, safety-related matters such as helmet wearing and conspicuity, their own image as riders, and views on other drivers, the police and legislation.
