Samenvatting

Collecting positioning data with handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) and mobile communication devices is becoming popular in Japan. Needless to say, positioning data are useful not only for travel and activity surveys, but also for traffic management. When we use positioning data, it is important to choose monitoring devices and systems properly. However, the characteristics of positioning data have not yet been examined sufficiently from the perspective of transport planning positioning and traffic management. This paper examines the characteristics of positioning data collected with GPS, enhanced GPS, and PHS (Personal Handy-phone Systems). Positioning data obtained with these devices at various locations in urban and suburban areas are compared. Considering various transport modes, the features of different positioning devices for tracing the path of a traveller from origin to destination are discussed.
