This report presents the results of surveys made in a number of Indian cities on the demand for public transport services. It is one of a series which presents the findings of a joint research project carried out over the two year period 1978-80 by the transport and road research laboratory (TRRL) and the Indian association of state road transport undertakings (ASRTU). demand for all modes of public transport was monitored, including that for privately operated intermediate public transport (IPT) modes. Such services are widely operated in cities of the third world, either in competition with or complementary to conventional bus services. Surveys undertaken mainly took the form of passenger interviews. The results give an insight into the travel patterns and socioeconomic characteristics of passengers using the various forms of public transport available for use in Indian cities. (Author/publisher)
