Samenvatting

A new Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology called Road Radar determines both the signal travel time and the velocity in the pavement layers at every measurement point thus making it self-calibrating by accounting for varying material properties. The system uses multiple antennas that permit layer thickness measurements from 50 mm to greater than two metres with accuracies of five percent. The system uses proprietary software to process and interpret the data. The first part of this paper is devoted to describing some of the innovations which have been incorporated into the Road Radar. The second part of this paper is for the purpose of describing field testing of the new technology. A significant period in 1993 technology. A significant period in 1993 was devoted to performing site demonstrations of the technology, and of performing data collection operations at a substantial number of locations in North America and Europe. A number of specific projects, involving pavement structures in Canada, United States and Finland, have been selected for inclusion in this paper, and are described hearafter. (A)
