Samenvatting

In this paper, the author outlines some of the current patterns of accidents to child pedestrians, the patterns of accident risk associated with this group of road users, and discusses some of the patterns of accident causation. Recommendations are made to reduce the number of accidents and include: (a) road safety measures aimed specifically at the journeys home from school; (b) parental and school based training programmes; and (c) traffic calming measures in urban areas.
