Samenvatting

This article summarises the scale of the child pedestrian casualty problem and trends over time and considers Great Britain's road safety record in relation to comparable European and other countries. It then outlines current research to improve our understanding of the factors which affect the chances of a child pedestrian being involved in a road accident and the effectiveness of training schemes to reduce accidents among pre-school and primary school children. These research projects form part of a programme of research funded by the Department of Transport which was designed to ensure that the most effective remedial measures are targeted at those at most risk.
