Samenvatting

The first part of a research project on children and instruction in road safety is presented. The investigation shows that the pupil's deficiencies in knowledge of road safety can be greatly reduced when the instruction is restricted to certain basic skills and takes place under certain controlled conditions. The result of the action programme shows that it certainly pays to give the children instructions in road safety. There are some important steps to be pointed out as regards the introduction of road safety in the lower and middle departments of the primary school. This instruction during the school years has to be planned; the main concentration must be on activities in a real traffic environment, cooperation must be stressed, and the work must be continuously evaluated.
