Samenvatting

Ten case studies are presented which describe innovative urban transport measures taken in large cities to decrease the problems of congestion, pollution and noise caused by traffic, and to encourage the use of public transport. The cities studied are: Athens, Gothenburg, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Munich, New York, Osaka, Paris and Singapore. Brief details are given of the traffic and transport schemes themselves, and the effects such schemes have upon noise and air pollution, use of public and private transport and modal split, and upon road safety and traffic congestion. This publication is supplemented by a separate book `Transport and the Environment' (see IRRD 813165-813169)
