Samenvatting

The paper reviews the role of the bus as an efficient form of public transport in the present operating and legislative conditions. Although the world's population is increasing at 10% per decade, with its demand on mobility, bus production is stagnating due to economic conditions. The bus is claimed to consume less energy per passenger-mile than any other form of public transport as well as reducing pollution and congestion. It is emphasized that the bus industry must pursue opportunities to demonstrate to governments the benefits ofan efficient public transport system in which the bus can play an important part.
