Samenvatting

An examination of the coach driver task was undertaken to address concerns about potential safety implications of the load placed on drivers, particularly that arising from attention to instruments and controls. The study included a review of relevant design guidelines and standards, and their implementation, an ergonomics evaluation of the coach driver workspace, and an analysis of the complete coachdriver task, utilising observational surveys en route and interviews with drivers and operators. The lack of consolidated guidance on design principles for coach control cabs was noted. Ergonomic deficiencies in typical driver workspace design, and opportunities for improvement in both workspaces and ancillary equipment were identified. The interaction of these factors with the complexity of the coach driver task, was seen to have the potential for detracting from safe operation. Recommendations relating to coach design, operations and regulations were presented.
