The present paper is intended as a review of one of these theories, cognitive complexity. This, too, is an attempt to understand the nature of man, or at least a portion of that nature: the structure and functioning of his cognitive domain. And it, too, is filled with the possibility of error and the certain need for unification and clarification. This review will not attempt to be exhaustive. It will focus rather on the major assumptions, points of agreement and contradiction in the several theories, and on the body of research data which has emerged from them.
