Samenvatting

This paper describes the methodology and aims of vehicle counting in western australia, and shows how changing technology has expanded the scope and value of the data collected. It particularly focusses on collecting weigh in motion data using the culway system. It discusses the evolution of the naasra vehicle classification system, and shows how the culway standard post processing software was developed around this system to provide useful summary data for a wide range of users. The uses to which the data are to be put are then listed. A brief explanation of how culway works is given, and several ongoing technical developments are discussed.
