The Peninsula Developmental Road stretches over 560km and is the only major road corridor connecting the far northern towns of Weipa and Mareeba in Queensland. In an effort to minimise damage to the road during wet weather, the Queensland Department of Main Roads installed a number of load limit signs along the route. The load limits are changed manually at each sign to reflect the permitted load limits. A more efficient and responsive mechanism to update the sign load limits was sought due to the number of remote sign locations, access difficulties, industry needs and workplace health and safety requirements, and frequency of load limit updates. This paper describes the adopted solution of a new Combination Traffic Sign incorporating static and dynamic message elements and an associated control system. Innovative dynamic modules were developed to show any message from a number of pre-determined messages. These modules are designed to be interchangeable and the concept may be well suited to numerous other dynamic message sign applications.
