Most existing systems for automatic access control are based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Recent developments in computer vision for automatic licence plate recognition show reasonable reliability and thus are now suitable for access control applications as well. Depending on specific requirements of operators the one or other technique is more or less advantageous. This paper focuses on more flexible access control systems based on a combination of 5.8 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) and automatic licence plate recognition. Experience collected at test installations are reported demonstrating the high flexibility of the proposed system.
