It is widely recognized that the skid resistance of vehicles and the abrasion of tyres are influenced largely by the pavement surface. This paper discusses some recent advances in the understanding of tyre to pavement interactions, including rubber friction and abrasion and relates these to the development of pavement surfacing technology.
