The recent development in combined/intermodal transport in Europe against the background of the single market in 1992, Channel Tunnel and competing technologies, is outlined. Recent initiatives to provide greater support for combined transport and the effects of emerging European Community rail policy are discussed and also the need for increased investment in route clearance for high cube containers, facilities for trans-alpine traffic and terminal development, particularly replacement of first generation equipment. It is indicated what has to be done before railways become major international freight carriers.
