Samenvatting

It is suggested that if saving lives on the road represents an important issue then passing laws incorporating both scientific and epidemiologicalal studies should be of utmost importance. Therefore it follows that alcohol-related traffic legislation should include lower legal limits where human driving abilities might really be impaired. The paper considers that the lowest politically acceptable general blood alcohol limit (BAC) should be agreed upon based on evidence from medicine, science and the law. After reviewing a wide range of international evidence concerning the benefits of a lower legal limit for BAC, the paper concludes that a lower legal limit for all countries can be expected to result in further reductions in the numbers of drivers and passengers killed or injured as a result of alcohol impairment.
