In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission, USA, allocated the 511 abbreviated dialling code for transportation agencies to use for the provision of traveller information. The number is now available in 24 states and there are plans to extend the system to other states and to Canada. The benefit of 511 include a reduction in the number of calls from travellers to the Highway Patrol, increased inter- and intra-agency coordination, ease of use, quality information, avoiding traffic congestion, weather information and increased safety. 511 calls are free to the user. Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are acceptable for 511 but take-up has been low and the public sector must expect to pay the costs associated with 511. Advice is given on setting up and deploying a 511 service.
