Samenvatting

The aims of the presented study can be summarised as follows: (1) to mount a training programme for children, using practical training methods; (2) to teach parental volunteers how to conduct such training; (3) to assess the programme's effectiveness in improving children's traffic judgements; and (4) to assess the feasibility of mounting such a community-based programme and to investigate the problems that arise in doing so. The intention was to reach all children in a community. Parents were asked to train all children in the target age group. A second feature concerned the way in which volunteers were prepared for the task. They were involved as actively as possible by providing them with hands-on experience of training under the guidance of the project staff. The paper presents the training situations and methods together with an evaluation of the effectiveness.
