The deployment of intelligent transport systems (ITS) technologies in vehicles and in the transport system over the last two years has been the major development on safety and infrastructure as we mark the beginning of the new millennium. At the last ITS World Congress, there were hundreds of papers which discussed technological developments in vehicles and the infrastructure systems they utilise. However, one notable exception amongst the work being reported was the evaluation of the road safety benefits of ITS and its affect on the driving task. There were very few papers investigating this issue. It is important for the development of ITS that the question of the relationship between human factors and specific technologies be investigated as this will affect the ultimate level of success of ITS in improving safety. This paper sets out to summarise the issues related to ITS and human factors, and report on research undertaken by NRMA Member Services to investigate the perceptions of, and reactions to, new technologies by potential users of ITS.
