This research used two psychometric scales to assess change in community annoyance and responses to road traffic noise in urban areas due to the influence of surface reseal. The research involved the repeated testing of 138 people in 12 sites. It was found that small increases in noise level are matched with changes in behavioural disturbance. Behavioural disturbance reduction was detected even when the reduction in noise is very small. The participants correctly identified the source of noise annoyance as being the road surface, and not cars, trucks or other characteristics, such as service covers.
