This paper describes the development and implementation of community road safety initiatives in Bangladesh, which has one of the highest road accident fatality rates in the world. Community road safety initiatives were part of a comprehensive road safety program implemented as a component of a major highway project funded by the World Bank and DFm (UK) in Bangladesh. Road safety awareness campaigns were undertaken with close cooperation of the local communities living along the highways being improved under the project. The study showed that the general public was lacking basic road safety knowledge and were unaware of various road safety measures provided by the authorities. The experience gained from the road safety awareness programs for the public, demonstrated adoption and application of various ways of providing road safety information and safety education to all road users.
