Compaction-Induced Earth Pressure Against Sheet Pile in Peat.

With vibrating wire total pressure cells (VW-TPC) instrumented on sheet pile wall in peat bog, lateral earth pressures developing in peat against the supporting face of sheet pile were measured during deep dynamic compaction (DDC) on the backfill between sheet pile walls. This paper examines measured total lateral earth pressure induced by impaction at different tamping distances. Analysis of data indicates that during DDC, pressure increments increase linearly with blow counts. Under the same compaction energy, pressure increments are determined by both the horizontal tamping distance, X, (distance from tamping point to sheet pile wall) and the vertical depth, Y, (distance to ground surface). Compaction-induced earth pressure increments can be modeled by an exponential relationship related with both X and Y. As field measurements show similar tendency as the result predicted by finite element method (FEM) simulation, it verifies that the developed exponential relationship is not unique one, but the result due to soil-structure interaction.
