Measurements of the saturation flows and pcu values on 3 intersections inChinese cities shows that the utilization of the roads around intersections is 20 to 30% worse compared to some intersections in 2 cities in The Netherlands. Gaps in saturated traffic flows are much more irregular and often larger in Chinese cities which is mainly because drivers tend to changelanes shortly before and after the stop line and possibly also because ofthe distractions of the driving task. A better driving discipline is expected to result in shorter cycle times, more safety, less queues and a larger reserve capacity, which would save a lot of money.
