Log-linear statistical regression models for fatal road accidents have been developed for Portuguese districts and English counties, fitted to annual data for the years 1987-1990. The explanatory variables used include road network length (by road class), vehicle ownership, annual traffic volumes, fuel consumption, resident population and appropriate socioeconomic factors. At the "SHRP and Traffic Safety on two Continents" conference 1993, a paper was presented which described the methods used in data standardization and model building, and which discussed some preliminary models fitted to the data then available. In this paper the final models for motorways and main roads in England and Portugal are introduced. England and Portugal are introduced. The models for Portugal use improved data for traffic volume and road length. A comparative analysis of the models is presented and their most interesting features (including the main differences between countries) are highlighted.
