Samenvatting

This presentation reviews the results of a French study (2001) about the different policies adopted at a national level by European countries for about 10 years to promote bicycle use. Countries can be classified into three levels, according to their results. The first group (Netherlands, Denmark) has a long cycling strategy. The second group (Germany, Switzerland) has developed restrictive measures on urban and transport planning which have given unequal results in built up urban areas. The last group (United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and France) try to make up for lost time by integrating cycle measures in laws and in planning or transport policy guidance.
