Samenvatting

Of the several road crash and injury data sources available for research and for developing policy, the most commonly used source is the police crash report. The aim of this paper is to examine and then compare police and hospital road crash and injury data. The different types of information available from each source will be discussed, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Misclassification and under-reporting of crashes is examined. Issues of data quality will also be addressed. The results of this analysis will assist in the planning of road safety programs (particularly those aimed at specific road user groups) where decisions are based on available data. (A)
